Tire Trivia: World's Biggest Tire

Uniroyal's Giant Tire

Uniroyal's Giant Tire

The world's biggest tire is an 80 foot diameter tire that was built for the 1964 New York World's Fair. It weighs 12 tons and the tread is 6 inches deep.

At the end of the fair it was dismantled and shipped in 188 sections via train to Allen Park, Michigan where it is standing along Michigan's I-94. Over time it began to deteriorate and locals were known to take potshots at it with both guns and bows leaving the tire with a handful of arrows sticking out of it.

It was refurbished in 1994, adding a new hubcap, again in 1998 when a 11-foot high, 500-pound nail was placed into the half foot thick tread of the Giant Tire as part of a campaign for Uniroyals "Nailguard" tires. The nail later removed and the tire received another million dollar renovation in 2003.

Ferris wheel ???????
by: Bill

Was this also a Ferris wheel at the 1964 New York world's fair I remember it vaguely being a some kind of amusement ride.

Editorial Comment:

Wikipedia reports that this was indeed, first created as a Ferris wheel for the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair. It was designed by the firm of Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, the same architectural firm that designed the Empire State Building.
