not sure which tire would be better

not sure which tire would be better

by bob Harris

I have a 2009 Harley Davidson Dyna fat bob with a stock 180/70 b16 rear tire. A tire shop told me I could go with a 180/70 r16. What's the difference, better tire, worse, handling, speed factors or any information or your opinion what to go with?

Editorial Comment:

The difference between a 180/70 b16 and a 180/70 r16 tire is in its construction. The "b" refers to bias ply construction while the "r" is for radial construction. Bias ply construction has stiffer side walls and usually the tire is more rigid and less flexible than the radial tire.

Which is better may be largely a matter of personal preference, but since the greatest tendency now days is toward radial tires, it is almost becoming impossible to find bias ply tires in many sizes, and it would appear that the majority of people are preferring the radials over bias ply tires.
