215/60 r16 used in place of a 215/50 r16
by: cougargirl

Can I replace the back tires of my 2000 Mercury Cougar with two 215/60r16? The original tires that are on it are the 215/50.... I want to make sure that I can actually use them before I take it in to have them put on.

Editorial Comment:

The difference in diameter of the 215/60 tires is almost 1 3/4 inches. The exact difference is 10% (60-50) of 21.5 mm, doubled, or 43 mm. Converted to inches this is 1.69.

If you have any doubts about whether or not you have the space in your wheel well (remembering that when the tire is in use there will be some movement because of the action of the springs), you'd be advised to try mounting the tires and testing them before you commit to using them.

Some vehicles have ample space, others are restricted, and it is possible the tires you're now using may be different from what the factory recommended. You can check the owner's manual or the door post sticker to see what size was recommended for your vehicle.
