Trailer tires
by: JW

If you were building wheels and tires to carry humans or just stuff, which would be the better tire? An auto wheel is is approx 10 lbs more, also an auto tire is designed for hard braking and high speed ramp driving. All car tires are radial an option on trailer tires. Hence auto tires far exceed trailer tires
Swaying was mentioned, this mostly comes from not enough tongue weight. More weight is required in front of the axle than behind it.

Low tire pressure causes swaying
by: Tireguy

I think it's important to clarify a point raised by the previous commenter, Dean, about a trailer swaying or wobbling down the road due to using C rated tires.

It could be that the trailer has tires which are not rated for the load, but it is not the kind of tire which is producing the unstable trailer -- the deminite cause of this is the lack of tire pressure.

That is to say that even a tire with the proper load rating will be unstable IF it doesn't have enough air pressure for the weight it is carrying.

It is quite likely, especially when carrying a heavy load that a passenger car tire wouldn't be able to resist the pressure that the load needs, but it is incorrect to say that the cause of the problem is the KIND of tire which is being used. If any tire is under-inflated in relation to the weight it is carrying it will be soft and will cause stability problems (in addition to other problems).

Please don't interpret this to mean that I encourage anyone to use car tires on a trailer, but, in a pinch and where the weight of the trailer together with the weight being hauled is low enough to be within the range of the car tire it might be good for a short slow-speed trip.

My main recommendation in the first reply was with respect of the wheels ... not the tires.

Using car tires on a trailer
by: Dean

Dear Dyob,

Your question can be answered with a short answer, or a long one.

The short answer is, NO!!!

Because, When using tires for a trailer, you should not use car tires! Car tires are rated as A/B, and most trailer tires are rated as a C class tire! This is the stiffness, or hardness of the tire.

If you've ever seen a trailer going down the road, and it is swaying back and forth as it's being pulled, that's because of 1 of 2 reasons: either the trailer is overloaded, or they used A/B rated tires, instead of C rated tires!

That's the short answer, so you can imagine how long the long answer will be!!!

Use C rated tires on your trailer for your, and public safty!!!

Go for it!

Dear dyob,
As long as the wheels match up with the hubs on your trailer you shouldn't have a problem.

You'll want to watch that you don't over load the tires by putting too much weight on the trailer, so watch for the load rating on those tires and make a regular habit of checking the pressure on those tires too. One tire with different pressure from the other can cause great handling problems.

Passenger car tires don't carry a load rating like tires which are designed specifcally for hauling such as light truck or trailer tires. You might want to use the wheels, but look for trailer tires which are capable of carrying the weight you'll be hauling.
