How important are the valves of your tire?

My good friend Monica is in public relations and a very fast thinker. I had to work overtime to convince her of the importance of her tire's valves.

They don't look like much but the valves of a tire are a complex piece of engineering comprised of metal tubes, springs, rubber and plastic. Valves perform a vital task in keeping your car and its tires functioning as they were designed. So whether you're busy shopping, rushing to an appointment or on your way to a friend's house, be glad that your valves are doing their job.

The valves are used to inflate your tire or adjust the air pressure, they automatically close or open when you need them to. Just a single grain of sand is enough to cause your valve to leak so remember to keep the cover on them. If you discover a valve cover missing, have it replaced as soon as you can.

When to change valves

Most professional tire dealers will change the valve when installing a new tire. It's worth checking if your dealer is doing it for you.
