Editorial Comment:
There are a lot of myths about the DOT code and the age of tire.
One of those is that tires "expire" or should be replaced after a certain length of time.
There is no law nor is there any manufacturer that I'm aware of that recommends this. What most manufacturers do is limit the time in which they will respond to warranty claims for defective manufacturing. Usually this is 5 or 6 years.
Part of this is based on experience that most tires have been used up ... that is their tread has been worn down to a useless level, long before the warranty limit has been reached.
You need to routinely inspect and maintain your tires, even if you do not use them very much. If you are doing this, you will likely become aware of any tire issues in time to take appropriate action. Do not simply mark a date on your calendar a certain number of years after you buy them and consider yourself clear of concerns about those tires until then.
