Tires Sold One Year After Date Code
by: DON

If tires were sold one year after date code, do you still consider a total of 6 yrs suggested replacement or seven?

Editorial Comment:

There are a lot of myths about the DOT code and the age of tire.

One of those is that tires "expire" or should be replaced after a certain length of time.

There is no law nor is there any manufacturer that I'm aware of that recommends this. What most manufacturers do is limit the time in which they will respond to warranty claims for defective manufacturing. Usually this is 5 or 6 years.

Part of this is based on experience that most tires have been used up ... that is their tread has been worn down to a useless level, long before the warranty limit has been reached.

You need to routinely inspect and maintain your tires, even if you do not use them very much. If you are doing this, you will likely become aware of any tire issues in time to take appropriate action. Do not simply mark a date on your calendar a certain number of years after you buy them and consider yourself clear of concerns about those tires until then.

Flip your tire over
by: Anonymous

If you have a DOT code that doesn't show the date of manufacture, you're looking at the wrong side of the tire. The complete DOT code has 12 characters but is only on one side of the tire.

See less than 12 characters? Flip your tire over and look on the other side.

1975 BFG TIRE?
by: Anonymous

I had hoped the spare in my 1971 Pontiac was still the original but the date code reads -BEVYELI375 only 10 digits. Because is is an HR78-15 and alpha-numeric designations went out of use about 1976 can I assume this tire was made the 37th week (October 1) of 1975?

That tells me the car had heavy use the first four years of its life and wore out a set of tires. The odometor is broke at 48,000 but I know the car has had less than 1,000 miles since the early 1990's.
If I remember correctly tires in the 60's and 70's only went 15-20,000 miles anyway?

Thanks for your help.
