Tire Concerns: Using Larger Tire Sizes
by: Harvey Brodsky

There are at least 3 things that we think about when changing tire sizes.

1) load capacity (same or higher) - no problem on either size.

2) diameter (within 3%) - the 215/65R15 is no problem, but the 225/65 is too big. I'd recommend 225/60R15 if you want to go that wide.

3) rim fit (new tire must match current rim width) - limited research tells me that the 1999 Taurus had 6.0" wide rims. If this is the case, the 215 and 225 sizes would be OK. It's possible that the car could be using a 5.5" rim. That rim is not wide enough for the 215 or 225 tires.

As always however, you should deal with a reputable tire dealer in your area, who may wish to add to what we have written.
