Editorial Comment:
What the commenter says applies specifically to mixing of tire sizes on AWD (all wheel drive) vehicles, and most AWD vehicle makers even go so far as to recommend that tires of the same size but with different amounts of wear not be mixed, for the same reason.
With a standard two wheel drive vehicle, this mixture of sizes will not produce disastrous results and may be done in an emergency (such as having a different sized spare tire until the regular one can get repaired), but it is still not recommended to mix tire sizes on the same axle.
Having had many years in the tire business, I take exception to the comment that MOST tire dealers will sell you anything you ask for just to make a sale. There may be some unprincipled operators around, but I believe that most professionals will at least strongly recommend that you use the most appropriate tires for your vehicle.
