You may have a problem of not watching tire pressure. For sure the tire pressure could cause these two opposite conditions. If the pressure is as little as 7 lbs under recommended minimum pressure the outside ribs of the tire will wear out rapidly and if the tire pressure is as little as 7 lbs (15%) over the maximum recommended pressure the center of the tire will wear out rapidly. In your case you should have noticed the car pulling significantly to the side with the low tire pressure. I am sure when you replace the these tires the dealer will install the new tires with the appropriate pressure. The the alignment man will recheck the pressure before checking the alignment and correcting it if necessary.
There is an additional condition that will cause the outside ribs to wear rapidly and that is driving conditions. If you regular driving route includes a distance of curving roads you will wear out the front tires quickly. All these are good reasons to maintain a constant routine of rotating your tires on a regular basis as mentioned.
