Tire Concerns: The Origin of Tire Safety Week

National Tire Safety Week was adopted into the Rubber Manufacturers Association's Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART tire care education program in 2002.
The Be Tire Smart program is funded by the Rubber Manufacturers Association's tire manufacturer members and enjoys the voluntary participation and partnership of thousands of tire retailers.
Additionally, the RMA works closely with AAA and coordinate with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and state safety officials.
This year, we celebrated the 9th annual National Tire Safety Week.
The purpose is to focus the tire industry’s collective efforts to educate motorists about tire care. Research by RMA and NHTSA showed at the time that motorists appeare to be ignoring this simple task and, unfortunately, continue to do so.
Since RMS began Tire Safety
week, the focus continues to be the benefits of proper tire care with reminders on the consequences of poor tire maintenance on safety and vehicle fuel economy. Although there have been some incremental improvements survey research since Tire Safety Week began show that too many vehicles --55%
-- have at least one under inflated tire.
The RMA will continue to work with members and partners to encourage motorists to take the simple steps to enhance safety and save money at the gas pump.
