can I put 235/75/r16 on my 2002 mitsubishi montero sport awd

Comment:

According to my information, the standard size tire for the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS was 255/70r16. If this is the size you were using then the 235/75R16 is quite feasible, in my opinion.

If you'll check our Tire Size Calculator you'll see that the difference is hardly worth mentioning but it is one which you need to be aware of just in case you might notice a slight difference in your speedometer after mounting them.

What concerns me more is your heading which implies that you are considering Studded Tires. You know that many states prohibit the use of these, while others allow them to be used only during limited periods of the year.

I believe it was your state, Washington, which conducted a rather extensive review of these tires a few years back and generally came to the conclusion that they weren't that great of a benefit.

It's a personal choice for you, but you might be just a far ahead choosing a good winter tire that uses special rubber compounds and tread design which enhance grip instead of paying a premium to get studded tires whose benefit is questionable.
