Tire Concerns: Larger winter tires on SUV

I have an SUV with 215/65 R16 96H Bridgestone® Dueler H/T687 M+S All-Season tires on them

I got a really good deal on a new set of winter tires:
225/70 R16 M + S

Can I fit them on to my SUV?



Editorial Comment:

The new tires you bought are larger in diameter than your originals. They are 1.40" bigger which means that your true speed will be 105.18% of what the speedometer shows but, the good news is that you could expect a 4.9% improvement in fuel consumption.

As long as you have enough room in the wheel wells to accommodate the larger size, there should be no other concerns.

Winter Tires

Larger tires can cause a reduction in the traction provided by the tires you chose. The reason is a larger footprint decreases the load per square inch of surface contact. In sand it is better to reduce the load but in snow and ice it is not. If you drove your SUV last year with the 215's you will notice a reduction in traction this year with the larger, wider tires. On a positive note there is also the chance the increased diameter will reduce the direct torque to the tire and will lend itself to reducing the spinning of the tires upon start up from a stop. As mentioned before the actual fit is something you will have to try and be very careful when you examine the clearances in the wheel well. Be sure to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and then again while the vehicle is moving slowly. At the end of that test you could also drive through a dip in the road, possibly a drive way at a speed that makes the care go down on the shock absorbers. That is another time at which the body of the vehicle could rub on the moving tire.
