by Dennis M

What can you tell me about SAXON snowblazer tires?

Are they worthwhile buying or should I keep clear of them. My vehicle is a GMC Envoy.

Editorial Comment:

Oddly enough we are one of the few websites that has any information on Saxon tires, which seem to be very popular.

Use the following to jump to our information on Saxon Snowblazer tires.

Make sure you read the comments others have made about these tires to see how worthwhile they think they are.

Winter tires for Subaru Outback

by Stan
(Montreal)

I have a Subaru Outback with 225/60 R16 All season tires and I ordered winter tires from a garage.

They put on 205/65 R16 winter tires yesterday.

I only noticed the size last night. My question is, is this correct or should the size have been the same? Are the smaller sized tires going to be a problem?

Snow Tires

I have a 2004 Mercedes e320 with 18" rims. I need snow tires. what size?

I currently have 245-40-18 and the shop is unable to tell me the tire I need.

Editorial Comment:

There are several sizes that might fit your vehicle and wheels. Enter your tire size into our Tire Size Calculator to see a list of possible sizes and the effect these might produce.

My only precaution would be to make sure the speed and load ratings are equal or higher and that you stay within 20mm (larger or smaller) in tire width -- the first number in your tire size.

215/55R16 leftover Snow Tires

by Chuck
(Colorado)

I have some studded snow tires left over from a previous vehicle, and I am wondering if I can use them on one of my existing vehicles. The snow tires' dimensions are 215/55R16, and are already mounted on rims.

I wanted to know if they might be able to go on a 2001 v6 4x2 Ford Escape, which has a normal tire size of 225/70R15.

I also have a Honda Odyssey minivan, on which the current tires are 235/65R16.

Editorial Comment:

Somehow, I have the impression you're not going to find a suitable match because you haven't specified what sizes you are thinking of putting on which vehicle.

To start notice that there is a rim size issue. If you have 16 inch tires, you cannot mount these on 15 inch rims.

Next, if you have the same size rim you need to compare the mounted diameter of the tires with those you wish to use as an alternative.

In very general terms, if one of the first two numbers in the size increases, the other number needs to decrease a certain amount so that the mounted diameter is about the same. The exact amount will vary but if you see both the numbers either increasing or decreasing together, you can almost be certain that the end result will not be satisfactory.

You can use our Tire Size Calculator to compare different sizes, but if the "test" I mentioned above isn't passed, there is no point in using the calculator to get the exact results.

Since you mentioned Fords and Hondas there is another issue which concerns me. Just because the wheels you have left over are the same diameter, and may even have the same number of bolt holes, doesn't mean they will fit. If the bolt pattern isn't identical you may have problems using the wheels and would be better off removing them from their existing wheels and mounting them on the wheels which correspond to the vehicle where you are going to use them.
