TOYO tyres missing DOT code
by: Confused

I bought 4 "new" TOYO tyers yesterday and noticed that only one of them has a DOT code printed on it.
Three others don't have it. Does it mean that 3 tyres are fake, or to old ?

Editorial Comment:

Since you spell tyres in the British fashion, it seems you might have purchased the tyre outside the USA. The DOT code, is required only for tires which are to be [sold in the US], although it is common to have it on many tires which never make it there.

Another alternative is that it is on the other side of the tire. It is only in recent years that some manufacturers have started placing a [partial] DOT code on one side and the complete code on the other.

Check your spare tire too!
by: Anonymous

I recently lost the tread off of a tire while going down a fast, crowded highway and narrowly missed causing a major accident.

I'd replaced my left rear tire with my spare tire about two months ago - I wasn't worried about it because it had perfect tread (when checked, it had never been used!) - but that was the tire that fell apart.

As it turns out, when I checked the date, the tire was manufactured in 1999! It was the original spare that was sold with my 2000 Honda CRV! And I didn't know this because I bought the car two years ago.

In addition to being old, if you think about it, this bad tire sat on the back of the car, in one position the whole time! In otherwords, it always had one side exposed to sunlight and heat (which would degrade more quickly) while the bottom was almost always in the shade.

So check your spare tire and even though your it may look brand new, check the date! And if you have an old one and need to use it, replace it right away.

Determining age of tire
by: Anonymous

Trying to find out age of my Michelin Cross Terrain tires. DOT code is Ap6J...what does this mean. Tires were purchased in 2007.

Editorial Comment:

You need to provide the complete DOT code to answer your question. It is in the form of
DOT XXXX XXXX XXXX.
It is possible the complete code is only on one side of your tire, but it is the last 4 of 12 characters which tell you the WWYY, or Week and Year (such as 4407 for week 44 in 2007).
