Dunlop Tyres were founded in
1888 by John Boyd Dunlop after he invented the modern pneumatic
inflatable tire. Its first factory opened in Dublin in 1889. Today
Dunlop is a brand owned by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company
and Sumitomo Rubber Industries.
There still remains a specialized
manufacturing site on the original Fort Dunlop factory site in
Erdington, England, which opened in 1891, and which produces
vintage, motorcycle and touring car tires.
During the 1970s, Dunlop pioneered
the world's first 'fail safe' tires, permitting a vehicle to
continue moving safely even following a blowout.
The Dunlop brand is used for sports
equipment, and separately owned companies continue to make products
such as aerospace tires and brakes under this name.
