Bigger rims,

My cadillac has 15 inch tires/rims on it. Would it hurt to put 16 or 17 on it without haveing to jack it up or do any mods to the wheel wells. With the 15's on i have about 5 inches from the top of the tire to the top of the wheel well on the inside, But i only have about 3 or 4 inches on the side?
