Color Me Blue

A more recent version of "colored tires"

In the mid-1950's some Buick dealers offered color-coordinated tires to go with your new car.

I recall seeing 1955 and 1956 Buick cars with blue, green and red accent tire colors. In those tires the color was on the sidewall between the whitewall (always had whitewalls in those days) and the tread.

To clairify a bit: looking at the wheel you would see, in order, from the center out: the hubcap (wheelcover), the visible edge of wheel, the whitewall and the remainder of that side in the chosen color.

The colored tires weren't very popular and disappeared in a couple of years.

Coloring comes and goes

I suppose that you were reminded of this by recent offers of tires in colors other than black.

Did you know that tires were originally white and became black when it was discovered that adding carbon black to the rubber compound made the tires last longer?
