Typical ATV tire mounting

What is the proper mounting direction for ATV tire tread. And, why. And, should the front and back be the same.
You know how the tread on general-use ATV tires is made to pull in one direction. Depending upon which way the tire is mounted on the rim will determine the orientation direction of the tread after installation on the ATV. There is a big difference between one direction for the tread versus the other.

Editorial Comment:  The photo above shows a typical tire mounting orientation for a mud type tire with a V tread design. You can see that both the front and rear tires are mounted so that the "V" bites into the surface as the tire rotates forward.

I'm not entirely convinced that this is the complete answer, but my sense is that using this mounting will help the tire to throw off mud and show better as it rotates, but if it were rolling in the other direction there would be more of a tendency for the mud to clog into the V and you'd then lose traction.
